Steps To Independent Living Program

The Hostel also provides support programs including; a Steps to Independent Living Program, Recreation and Social Activities and Community Reconnection.

Steps to Independent Living is a transition program to help youth move to successful independent adulthood by helping youth find permanent employment, housing and acquire life skills that enable them to reconnect to the community as independent and self supporting members of the community.

Programs are based on the H.E.L.P. (Health, Employment, Life Skills, Prevention) standards. The service works with youth on two levels of support.

The first level is to provide hands on concrete services to the youth.

The second level is to connect the youth to the community through a community plan that addresses employment, housing, education and social support issues.

Some activities included in this program are:

  • Advocacy
  • Mentoring
  • Crisis Counseling
  • Social & Recreation Activities
  • Housing Search Assistance
  • Housing Maintenance Assistance
  • Household Management & Budgeting
  • Cooking & Cleaning
  • Education Support & Job Readiness

Recreation and social activities are also provided to the youth. These activities provide youth an opportunity to explore and develop a full range of abilities.

By participating in these activities youth develop a positive attitude and develop a wide range of skills including team work, leadership, problem solving, conflict resolution, decision making, communication and self esteem.

Youth Hostel Services strives to reconnect youth back to their home communities.

Attachment to home communities provides youth a support base where they can find, rediscover and maintain community support as well as their independence and become a self-supporting member of the community.

This program is made possible through the Region of Niagara, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and the All That Kids Can Be initiative of the United Way of St. Catharines & District.
